Why shoot Quantified Performance Matches?
Two Words: "Skill Transfer"
BLUF: Its Time-based and translates to our rapidly evolving OE.
Dont trust me? Listen to another Pro, Kahl Harmon, in his interview with BRCC. Long-gone are the days of "slow-but-accurate."
Competitions like QP have the potential to be AMAZING venues for relevant and realistic marksmanship training. Evidence from 16 years of studying performance analytics, training development, and instructional design with the DoD supports this. Some competitive venues even show a greater return on investment than institutional training (formal courses). The most important variable tied to this is SKILL TRANSFER. Rulesets and scoring mechanisms built to capture and quantify specific skills relevant to the Operational Environment (OE) are powerful tools that promote skill transfer from a competition to the OE.
Institutional Training is severely limited in what it can provide. For introductory level instruction, it is the best way to build a solid foundation of knowledge and skill. Beyond that, true experiential learning beyond a classroom or flat-range is king.
QP isn't perfect, but it is one of the only rulesets that has such an incredibly high value in skill transfer. The perfect blend of time-based scoring with realistic mid-range targets is a recipe for success. The rules prioritize and reward desirable skills for the OE. Kahl Harmon, in his interview with the BRCC Podcast, echoes a very important developing trend in the DoD and especially the Sniper community. "Time is time."
